(TIMESONLINE) - One of Britain’s most eminent physicians has written to the Department of Health urging the Government to open an inquiry into whether Ferrari is in breach of the EU-wide tobacco sponsorship ban, The Times has learnt.

Professor John Britton, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and director of its Centre for Tobacco Control Studies, has also written to the BBC asking it to consider whether it is appropriate to screen Formula One racing while the team stands accused of potential subliminal advertising by the European Commission.

The row centres on Ferrari’s use of a red, white and black barcode which is emblazoned on the racing team’s cars and its drivers’ overalls. Both the European Commission and advertising experts argue that the barcode is designed to remind viewers of a packet of Marlboro cigarettes.

Under 2002 law passed in both Britain and in Brussels, it is an offence for a tobacco company to sponsor a sporting event.

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 officials said they will review how other school districts utilize corporate sponsorships and advertising to generate revenue before making any decisions.

The School Board decided Monday to send the issue to the district’s Policy Committee for further discussion before discussing the topic again as a full board.

“I think the timing is right to move forward and have a philosophical discussion about corporate sponsorships,” said District 86 Superintendent Nicholas Wahl. “It is a good time to discuss the topic because we will soon find out what the consumer price index is for the coming year, the Finance Committee is scheduled to meet soon and we can talk about potential revenue sources for the budget.”

A few months ago the board asked administrators to examine how other school districts deal with corporate sponsorships as a way to generate revenue.

The spending at Leeds Metropolitan University has included more than £600,000 paid to the Northern Ballet company and £14m on a new green and purple pavilion at the historic Headingley cricket ground.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England is now examining spending at Leeds Met to determine whether the university has fulfilled its duties to use public money responsibly.

The scale of the spending, revealed in disclosures under the Freedom of Information Act, has been blamed for a crisis at the former polytechnic, which already has one of the worst staff-to-student ratios of any British university.

As revealed by Sportsbeat yesterday, GSG and its chief executive and sole director Mark Cas are the subject of a police investigation after taking thousands of pounds in management fees in return for promised but non-existent sponsorship deals.

National sports agency Sportsbeat understands Cas - who has served two prison sentences for fraud - has also run up six-figure debts with suppliers, while staff walked out before Christmas after wages were not paid.

Steele paid £500 to GSG after spotting their advertising in Athletics Weekly.

Cas claimed they had facilitated him a £7,500 sponsorship with official London 2012 partner British Airways but no money was ever forwarded.

(CRASH.net) - Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has picked up top honours at the Arabian Sponsorship Awards for its support of the inaugural F1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline picked up the award in the ‘International Sponsorship’ category at a gala ceremony which took place on Monday, December 14 at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: “Etihad’s sponsorship of the inaugural F1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix showcased both Etihad and Abu Dhabi to a global audience of more than 600 million people.

“Recognised as one of the biggest and most prestigious sporting events in the world, courted by leading companies and countries alike, the Abu Dhabi F1 weekend provided unprecedented presence, visibility and credibility for a new airline brand launched only six years ago.

“We are proud to have played a key part in supporting the biggest international event ever to be staged in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and to play an integral part in its promotion and success. Based as we are in Abu Dhabi, the title sponsorship of the inaugural F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a perfect and logical fit for Etihad Airways.”
