Howlet codec deploys with ease and increases network call capacity

(PRWEB) April 29, 2010 — Misgav, Israel and London, UK – Xorcom, a privately-held manufacturer of business telephony interfaces and appliances based on Asterisk open source software, and Howler Technologies, the high definition voice and video transcoding company, and providers of a wide range of cost-effective, carrier-grade transcoding solutions to the telecoms industry, announced today that they have successfully completed interoperability testing between Xorcom’s IP-PBX models and Howler Technologies’ G.729 software codec for Asterisk, known as “Howlet”.

Xorcom IP-PBX: Reliable, Flexible Asterisk-based Telephony Platforms

Xorcom’s all-in-one appliances allow seamless communication using both VoIP and traditional telephony protocols. Xorcom’s unique system design ensures the reliability expected from a propriety telephony system, while providing the flexibility, scalability, easy integration and competitive pricing afforded by an open source platform. The Xorcom IP-PBX line supports all the features of the extremely popular Asterisk PBX operating system while providing additional benefits, such as dual-PBX hot failover with the award-winning TwinStar feature, high density of telephony interface combinations in a small footprint, etc.

Howlet: High-performance G.729A Specifically Designed for Ease of Deployment with Xorcom

The G.729 codec is an industry standard algorithm that compresses and decompresses a digital audio stream. Applied to Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, G.729 compresses the audio data to use significantly less network bandwidth than a standard or uncompressed VoIP call.

Instead of the 64kbit/s required for a standard, uncompressed G.711 PCM audio data stream, the G.729 codec compresses the payload to 8kbit/s. This compression allows for more calls to be carried without increasing network capacity and allows voice to travel on limited-bandwidth connections that would otherwise not support VoIP.

Howlet delivers a high-performance G.729A implementation that has been specifically designed for ease of deployment with the Xorcom IP-PBX range of products. The Howlet is compatible with a range of popular software, including Asterisk, Elastix, and trixbox.

Partnership Provides Alternative to High Price Tag and Implementation Hassle

“Howlet allows Xorcom integrators to avoid the responsibility of paying the license fee for the Open Source version of the G.729 codec (for which initial license fees are approximately $25,000 – $30,000), since Howlet is GPLv2 compliant and includes the G.729 Patent Royalty,” notes Eran Gal, CEO, Xorcom. “It supports our standard software platforms — Asterisk, Elastix and trixbox — out-of-the-box, so implementation is a breeze.”

“The G.729 Howlet’s scalability, and its flexible, distributed licensing options, are perfectly suited Xorcom line of flexible and scalable IP-PBXs,” stated Mike Vieyra, CEO, Howler Technologies. “Xorcom customers can now benefit from increased call capacity over their existing bandwidth, at a reasonable price.”

G.729 for Xorcom Asterisk-based IP-PBX: Implementation Guidelines

G.729 requires CPU resources. On its Web site, Xorcom has published tables which show the conversion time (using different compression methods) that can be achieved by each member of Xorcom’s IP-PBX family (see http://www.xorcom.com/application-notes/g729.html).

Prior to purchase, integrators will need to compute the number of G.729 channels required by the specific configuration. The number can be estimated using the following information:

	• a call between two SIP extensions usually requires two G.729 channels, unless the pass-thru mode is used (http://voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+G.729+pass-thru), in which case it doesn’t require any G.729 channel.
• a call between a SIP extension and a Zaptel/DAHDI extension/trunk requires one G.729 channel.
• a call to Voice Mail or another Asterisk service where IVR messages must be played requires one G.729 channel.

About Howler Technologies:
The partnership will mean that Ethoca’s new Ethoca360 Negative Signals service will be available to all GB Group customers through their URU identity verification service.

The new Ethoca360 Negative Signals service has recently been made available for free and is the first and only one of its kind. For merchants who sign up now and until further notice, Ethoca has committed to keeping the Negative Signals version of Ethoca360 Signals free forever. Although a commercial grade service, Ethoca decided to make it freely available to all online merchants in an effort to accelerate market adoption, build broader industry collaboration and help stem the massive losses that are suffered to online fraud each year.

Ethoca360 Negative Signals is available now as an integrated service within GB Group’s URU identity verification service, bringing the power of the Ethoca community to earliest stage in the customer lifecycle. By bringing Ethoca360 Negative Signals into the equation, any decision made by a merchant can also be measured according to the potential risk of that transaction.

“Negative Signals is an additive service, and as such it is an ideal fit for the complementary identity verification tools and methodologies offered by GB Group,” explained Andre Edelbrock, CEO, Ethoca. “We are looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership with GB Group as we protect our customers against fraud and the associated revenue losses, whilst allowing them to concentrate on enhancing their own customers’ experience.”

More information can be found, and applications for this free service are now being accepted at http://www.ethoca.com/negative-signals/

About Ethoca:

Edinburgh, Scotland (PRWEB) June 12, 2009 — The Edinburgh Capitals, Scotland’s only Elite league Ice Hockey team, are hosting a four team tournament to celebrate Scotland’s contribution to the game of Ice Hockey and "Ice Hockey’s Homecoming". The teams will be fighting it out to win the Gardiner Cup.

Councillor Steve Cardownie, Festivals and Events Champion for the City of Edinburgh, said, "We’re in for a fabulous and unprecedented spectacle here in September with the arrival of these two top ice hockey teams from Canada. This will be the first time an event like this has taken place in the UK so it really is hats off to Edinburgh Capitals for making it happen. ‘Ice Hockey’s Homecoming’ will showcase the sport being played at the very highest levels and will undoubtedly inspire many of our young people to get involved in the sport. Yet again we are proud to demonstrate to the watching world that Edinburgh truly excels at delivering premier events."

The tournament will feature two American Hockey League (AHL) teams, the Toronto Marlies (AHL Affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) and the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) and 2 UK Elite league teams, the Edinburgh Capitals and the Belfast Giants. It will take place at Murrayfield Ice Rink in Edinburgh. The timetable is below.

Thursday 24th September - a "head to head" clash between the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Toronto Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September - a Festival of Ice Hockey, a four team tournament where the best of UK Hockey face off against two of Canada’s top teams.

The Gardiner Cup celebrates the life of Charles ‘Chuck’ Gardiner. Known as the wandering Scotsman, he was one of the games pre-eminent goal tenders during the 1920’s and 30’s. Born in Edinburgh, on Henderson Row, he then moved to Canada with his family eventually settling in Winnipeg. He attained NHL stardom with the Chicago Blackhawks where he guarded the cage from 1927 - 1934. Prior to his untimely death in 1934 he led the Blackhawks to their first Stanley cup win and in 1945 and was the first Scot to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Naming the tournament cup after this great player seemed a fitting accolade for Chuck and his family.

In Scotland’s year of Homecoming it is only fitting that a game that Scottish people played a key role in inventing comes home. This is the highest level of competitive ice hockey to be seen in Scotland and without the support of our sponsors this event would not have been possible.

Scott Neil, the Managing Director of The Edinburgh Capitals, said, "This is an inspiring tournament made possible by the help and support of the City of Edinburgh Council. At a time when we did not think such an ambitious event could be staged in Edinburgh the Council stepped in with their support. We are delighted that such prestigious teams are coming over from Canada and we welcome them and their fans to Edinburgh."

Scott added, "We have also worked with Homecoming Scotland and VisitScotland whose help and advice has made this dream become a reality."

Jeff Jackson, the General Manager and Governor of the Toronto Marlies, said of the tournament "The Marlies are thrilled to participate in Scotland’s "Ice Hockey’s Homecoming" Tournament and to compete for the Gardiner Cup. This will be a terrific hockey and life experience for our players and we’re honoured to be a part of this unique event. We are looking forward to a competitive tournament and showcasing a number of our NHL prospects to the hockey fans in Scotland."

"Both the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Toronto Marlies were approached by the Edinburgh Capitals to compete in an international hockey tournament as part of Scotland Homecoming 2009", said Hamilton Bulldogs President and Governor Glenn Stanford. "Both organizations saw this as a wonderful opportunity for their players and staff to see a part of the world that might be new to them, while at the same time, prepare for the upcoming AHL season." Stanford added, "We’re looking forward to opening our pre-season in Edinburgh before returning home to finish training camp and the pre-season in preparation for our 14th season in Hamilton.

Holiday Inn Edinburgh is the official accommodation partner for the tournament. It is the largest hotel in Edinburgh with 303 bedrooms. General Manager Philip Counsell said, "We are extremely excited to be a part of this unique event. Not only do we look forward to hosting the Visiting Teams but also the fans and families that this type of tournament will attract."

Help celebrate Ice Hockey’s Homecoming to Scotland

For full details of the event and to purchase tickets go to www.icehockeyshomecoming.com and be part of this unique sporting event.

# # #
